department of defense to protect James Meredith when he went to the school. The day

before he started college, riots were breaking out. Several hundred federal marshals
fought back with tear gas and night sticks. The following day he started school. Justice
Department officers accompanied him to class. Meredith graduated with a degree in

              EnDing Discrimination in voting
Many black people were not allowed to vote in the 1960’s because the white people in the
South used any excuse to not allow them to register to vote. They required people to pass

a test and pay money to vote. You have to register to be able to vote. Without voting,
Blacks had no power. Kennedy tried to get more Blacks registered to vote by supporting
students to go and register black voters in the South. He thought that if Blacks could vote,
they could change laws and the people who governed them. More government people
would then help the Blacks because they would want the black people to vote for them.

                   Now I Know :

ƒ Democracy means the government by the people.
ƒ Democracy is of two types — direct and indirect.
ƒ Direct Democracy is that form where all adults assemble together to make laws, pass budgets and elect officers.
ƒ Indirect Democracy takes the form of representative government.
ƒ Equality and justice is the central theme of democracy.
ƒ People participate in the decision-making process in a democracy through elections. They choose their representatives
who take decisions on behalf of the entire population.
ƒ Universal Adult Franchise means that all adults in the country are allowed to vote.
ƒ Regular elections are the essential feature of a democracy.
ƒ A political party is an organisation of people who have similar views or a set of beliefs on political issues.
ƒ If no single party wins a clear majority, two or more parties together form the government. This type of government
                  is called a coalition government.
ƒ Governments have been classified on the basis of relationship of the political executive with the legislative branch.
ƒ The government is headed by a Prime Minister, who is usually the leader of the political party that wins a majority
of seats in election to the parliament.
ƒ President John F. Kennedy supported the people who wanted desegregation, like James Meredith and black students
                  at the University of Alabama.
