Gender refers to the fact of being male of female, especially when considered with reference to social and cultural differences.
There are certain social norms and values that determine roles expected from boys and girls in the family, commu-
nity, school and public places.
Traditionally, girls are expected to grow up and marry, have the children, do the house work and take care of the
family.
Boys are expected to work outside the home and earn money to support the family.
A person becomes aware of his or her gender role through interactions with other people, in the family, in the com-
munity, in school and in public places.
Major areas of discrimination against women in India are economic and social inequality.
Women have struggled to bring about many favourable changes for themselves. This struggle is known as the
women’s movement.
