Puducherry: As we go south from Chennai, along the coast, we come to the union

             territory  of Puducherry, previously known  as Pondicherry.  It is famous  for the
             Aurobindo Ashram. At one time it was ruled by the French. The people here speak

             Tamil and English. Some of them also speak French.

                               • The Deccan Plateau has the Western Coastal Plains on the west
                               and Eastern Coastal Plain on the east.


                               • The Western Coastal Plain consist of the Gujarat Coast, the Konkan
                               Coast and the Malabar Coast.

                               • The Eastern Coastal Plain consist of the Northern Circars in the

                               north and the Coromandel Coast in the south.
                               • About 300 islands make up the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

                               • Fishing, agriculture, working in parts and in petroleum and other

                               industries, and tourism are the main occupation of the people.
